IPC-7712 Development Advances at IPC APEX EXPO: Committee Aligns on Scope, Structure, and Industry Priorities

Significant progress was made in developing the proposed standard IPC-7712, Component Safe Removal for Failure Analysis and Reclamation, during in-person meetings held at IPC APEX EXPO, March 16 to 18. The working group, composed of industry experts spanning failure analysis, rework, manufacturing, and reliability disciplines, convened to refine the standard's direction and accelerate the development of the draft.

Chaired by Jeff Ferry and guided by IPC liaison Francisco Forecade, the committee held a series of structured sessions to define the technical scope, terminology, and intended use cases for the new standard.

"The level of engagement and alignment we achieved at APEX is a strong indicator that this standard is addressing a real and immediate industry need," said Ferry. "We are building a practical, usable document - one that reflects how work is actually performed in failure analysis labs and reclamation environments."

The committee emphasized a guiding principle of practicality and proportionality, ensuring the standard remains accessible to a wide range of organizations - from specialized reclamation facilities to OEM reliability labs - without imposing unnecessary procedural burden.

Next steps include expanding draft sections, incorporating additional technical input, and initiating broader committee review cycles through IPC's consensus-driven standards development process.

The development of IPC-7712 reflects increasing industry focus on sustainability, component lifecycle extension, and supply chain resilience, while also supporting more accurate and repeatable failure analysis practices.
